World no-smoking day: stopping smoking only has advantages
Fewer and fewer people smoke in Germany - but the number of smokers is still high. About one in three people in Germany take a cigarette. Many smokers want to quit, but the attempt often fails. Some don't even stop smoking at all because they think they'll never make it anyway. Stopping smoking can have great health benefits and significantly extend life! On the occasion of the World Non-Smoking Concentration Disorder Day 2017, an expert gives tips on how to successfully exit from addiction.

A clear decision to stop is helpful
"Tomorrow I will definitely smoke my last cigarette!" Most smokers probably know this plan. Some actually manage to spontaneously express the last tip and never start again. However, this includes the firm will to want to do it - and that too does not guarantee lasting success. “Sometimes the clear decision helps. Unfortunately, the temptation is sometimes too great and it takes several attempts to spontaneously overcome smoking, ”explains Edith Girstenbrei-Wittling from the Caritas addiction counseling and treatment center in Augsburg.

For many, stopping smoking is therefore not easy and relapses through familiar routines can quickly occur. "I had been through it for three weeks, but then I had stress with my boss and bought a package on the way back home," says Anke P. Not to deal with whiting alone, instead they would need “help from a group,” says the expert.

Switching to e-cigarettes does not make sense
It is not uncommon to try to give up “normal” smoking by switching to e-cigarettes. But the addiction expert at Caritas is not convinced of this, as e-cigarettes would keep the smoker old behavior patterns. "It's better to do it without a replacement, maybe a nicotine patch," recommends Girstenbrei-Wittling. In some cases, stopping smoking is also an involuntary response to a change in living conditions such as a pregnancy or illness. However, many ex-smokers have a hard time here and often several attempts are necessary to achieve a smoke-free life.

It remains to be seen whether the new cigarette packs with shock images of black lungs and bloody smoky legs can help here. Because on May 20, the bill to amend the Tobacco Products Act came into force, according to which at least 65% of the front and back of the packets must be covered with warnings in the form of scary photos and text. This implementation of an EU directive also applies to rolling tobacco pouches and hookah tobacco. But the drastic measure is controversial. Many experts question the usefulness of the photos and call for a more extensive ban on tobacco advertising. The Augsburg tobacco shop owners also largely agree, says Gabriela Lösche from the Bertsche tobacco shop in an interview: "Anyone who smokes now will continue to smoke."

Help from Allen Carr's "finally non-smokers"
Many people who want to quit can find support in the well-known book “Finally Non-smokers” or in seminars based on the content of the work written by Brit Allen Carr in 1985. Carr had given up smoking after more than three decades and now wanted to help others with his “Easyway” method to overcome their addiction.

Hypnotherapy can also be used effectively to quit smoking. Here the smoker is put into a trance state in order to be able to analyze and "reprogram" the deep psychological motives for smoking. So does someone grab e.g. Especially with stress or tension to the cigarette, it is important to learn alternative behavior patterns for these situations. Many people also rely on acupuncture to stop smoking. Three needles are usually pricked into the so-called “addiction points” in the ear, which suppresses the desire to smoke and minimizes withdrawal symptoms such as inner restlessness and irritability. One session is often enough to get rid of the old vice.

Health and psyche benefit
And it's always worth it. Because giving up smoking only means advantages. These include above all the health effects, because smoking applies e.g. as a central risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, stroke, smoker's cough or a smoker's leg. In addition, according to the Federal Center for Health Education (BzgA), it is responsible for 25 to 30 percent of all cancer deaths, reports the news agency "dpa". According to the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg (DKFZ), male smokers have e.g. a 20 to 30-fold increased risk of lung cancer compared to non-smokers. The risk of smoking women is 9 times higher than that of non-smokers.

The exit from addiction also has a positive effect on the psyche. Because many former smokers describe the new life without cigarettes as "more independent" and "freer", since there is no more stress if it is absolutely necessary to smoke at certain intervals. In addition, the external appearance benefits, because smoking e.g. for more wrinkles and faster skin aging. If you stop, you will quickly get a significantly fresher and smoother complexion and look healthier overall. The hair and nails become stronger again, as do unsightly yellowish stains on the fingers and on the nails. (sb)
