Menstruation is really not a good time for most women: many have symptoms such as pain, cramps, irregular or very heavy bleeding during their period. If the latter is the case, it is best to see a doctor to find out the cause.

In gynecology, it is assumed that the menstrual period is too heavy if a woman regularly loses more than 80 milliliters of blood during her menstrual period.

This can be indicated if a woman has to change her bandages or tampons regularly after an hour or two, if she feels very weak, tired and lacking in energy during the period or if the menstrual blood is lumpy.

Iron deficiency due to excessive blood loss
If a woman loses too much blood and therefore iron during her period, this can lead to an iron deficiency.

If there is too little iron in the body, sufficient red blood cells cannot be produced and anemia occurs.

Those affected should best contact a doctor to find the reason for the heavy bleeding and to discuss treatment options if necessary.

The uterus cannot contract properly
According to the experts, some girls have a very heavy menstrual period right from the start. For most women, the bleeding only gets worse at a later point in time, for example after birth or after the insertion of a spiral for contraception.

Hormonal changes, such as during menopause, can also help.

According to the IQWIG, the most common cause of excessive menstrual bleeding is that the uterus cannot contract properly.

Possible reasons for this include larger benign tumors such as fibroids and mucosal polyps. The latter grow in the endometrium, fibroids in the muscular layer of the uterus.

Other common causes of heavy bleeding are adhesions to the uterus or inflammation. Other medical problems such as hormonal disorders, blood clotting disorders, heart, kidney, thyroid or liver diseases can rarely trigger increased menstrual bleeding.

A clear cause cannot be found in all cases.

Treatment options depend on the cause
The treatment options for very heavy menstrual periods depend on their cause, according to IQWIG. Polyps and fibroids can be surgically removed.

However, some women first try drugs that reduce the tendency to bleed. The contraceptive pill also weakens the menstrual period.

With severe complaints and complete family planning, the lining of the uterus can be removed or made empty. In the case of very severe and stressful symptoms, removal of the uterus may be an option.

Affected women can also help themselves without medical treatment, for example by wearing tampons and bandages at the same time on days with particularly heavy bleeding, the foundation advises. Dark pants or skirts can also hide small blood stains.

It is generally helpful if the partner, friends, relatives, colleagues, but also doctors take menstrual cramps seriously.

Relieve menstrual cramps naturally
The other menstrual cramps can often be alleviated naturally. So women can fight abdominal pain by moving a lot.

But even if sport helps against menstrual cramps, experts warn against exercising intensely, as this can lead to an irregular period or even failure to do so.

Women should only do sports if they feel able to do so. Those who suffer too much from menstrual cramps do not have to force themselves to move.

Those who rely on naturopathy for menstrual pain can, for example, provide soothing warmth “from the inside” with a healing tea for which mugwort leaves, lady's mantle, yarrow or chamomile are used. (ad)
