Many frozen fries loaded with acrylamide
Potato products such as chips or fries have been criticized several times in the past because of their high acrylamide content. A current study by the magazine "Öko-Test" shows that the harmful substance acrylamide is still an issue in frozen chips. In addition, there is a possible burden with questionable germ inhibitors. However, eight out of 19 products tested were rated “very good” or “good”.

For the current investigation, the ÖKO-TEST magazine had the ingredients of frozen chips analyzed in the laboratory. The result is still questionable. Many products still achieve an acrylamide value which, according to the “Öko-Test”, is too high. In addition, a number of products were contaminated with germ inhibitors. On a positive note, at least eight frozen french brands received a "very good" or "good".

Acrylamide is carcinogenic
"Unfortunately, the pollutant acrylamide is still an issue," sums up the test results. The pollutant arises "when carbohydrate-rich foods such as potatoes are baked, fried, deep-fried or roasted" and has been shown to be cancer-causing and genetically harmful in animal experiments, reports the magazine. This is why the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued an explicit warning last year about the increased cancer risk from acrylamide in food.

More than half of the products with too high an acrylamide value?
With the exception of three brands, acrylamide was detected in all frozen chips tested, although only eight traces of the pollutant were found in the laboratory analysis. The tester reported that the acrylamide value of all tested articles was still below the so-called signal value. In the opinion of "Öko-Test", however, this should not be considered as harmless. Consumers should therefore still be careful, the magazine advises. Because the pollutant is found in numerous foods that are consumed daily, which is why "in the opinion of" Öko-Test "a single food should not contain more than ten micrograms of acrylamide". This value was exceeded for nine frozen french brands.

Chlorpropham in most frozen chips
According to the "Öko-Test", it should also be criticized that chlorpropham has been detected in some products. Conventional farmers often use this as a germ inhibitor. The substance is believed to be carcinogenic and only the four organic products in the test did not contain chlorpropham. Here organic farmers are trying to prevent the formation of germs through temperature-controlled storage.

French fries are not suitable for regular consumption
“Öko-Test” reports further that “two manufacturers are adding glucose and dextrose to the chips”, which remains unintelligible for the testers, since the additional sugar is completely unnecessary here. After all, almost half of the brands examined are definitely recommendable according to the criteria of "Öko-Test". The frozen fries, however, are generally not "the healthiest meals and should therefore not be on the menu every week," the testers concluded. (fp)
