The number of chickenpox cases in the north has increased significantly
The number of chickenpox cases has risen sharply in Schleswig-Holstein. According to AOK Nordwest, around 50 percent more infections were reported in the first half of 2016 than in the same period of the previous year.

Chickenpox is one of the most common teething problems
Chickenpox is highly contagious and is one of the most common teething problems. You are immune to it all your life if you have had it, but you run the risk of developing shingles later. The most typical symptom that indicates the infectious disease is a red, itchy rash with red nodules on the skin. In addition, there is often fever, headache, fatigue and body aches. Adults get sick too, but the majority of patients are children.

The number of diseases has increased significantly
A decrease in the number of illnesses has been reported frequently in recent years, but chickenpox cases have increased significantly in Schleswig-Holstein, reports the news agency dpa. According to AOK Nordwest, a total of 354 cases of infection were reported in the first half of 2016, almost 53.3 percent more than in the same period of the previous year (231). The number rose by 29.4 percent throughout Germany. The health insurance company used figures from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin.

Experts recommend vaccination
According to the agency, AOK CEO Tom Ackermann said: "Due to the increasing number of infections, we strongly advise that children be vaccinated against chickenpox in particular." The statutory health insurance companies in Germany paid for such recommended vaccinations. Various experts such as the Stiftung Warentest had advised against chickenpox vaccination in the past, but according to the RKI "vaccination as an active immunization" is the "best prevention of varicella infection". The varicella zoster virus (VZV) can cause shingles in addition to chickenpox.

Highest increase in larger cities
A total of 561 chickenpox cases were reported in Schleswig-Holstein in 2015, compared to 463 in the previous year. The highest increase in cases occurred in the cities of Kiel and Lübeck and in the Pinneberg district. As the AOK announced, vaccination can be rescheduled at any time if it was not at the recommended age. (ad)
