Everyday nuts make us grow older
A few years ago nuts were misunderstood as healthy food, the different types of nuts are experiencing a veritable renaissance. Science is finding more and more positive properties, according to a study by scientists that was undertaken for the 13th nutritional report of the German Society for Nutrition.

Eating nuts and almonds is likely to lower your risk of developing coronary artery disease. Scientists found this out for the 13th DGE nutrition report.

They suspect that the polyphenols, fiber, and the favorable fatty acid composition contained in nuts and almonds produce the positive effect. These ingredients seem to be more important than their absolute, high fat content.

A handful of nuts every day
In addition to many mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, they are a good source of vegetable protein, B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium, calcium and iron. Nuts and almonds are high in calories and are foods with a high energy density.

In the interests of preventive nutrition, the DGE recommends eating a handful, about 25 g, of it every day. In this amount, and ideally unsalted, both nuts and almonds are an important part of a balanced diet. They do not only taste good during Advent.

Also effective for colorectal cancer prevention
"We have known for a long time that there are nuts full of ingredients that are good for the cardiovascular system, protect against obesity or diabetes," confirms Dr. Wiebke Schlormann. Her protective effect against colon cancer has already been suggested in numerous studies, the nutritionist continues. "What we didn't know in detail yet is what the protective effect of nuts is based on."

Dr. Schlörmann and her colleagues from the Chair of Nutritional Toxicology at the University of Jena are now providing concrete answers. In a study recently published in the journal “Molecular Carcinogenesis”, they present results that shed light on the molecular mechanisms of this protective effect (DOI: 10.1002 / mc.22606).

The health-promoting effect of nuts is based, among other things, on the fact that the body's defenses are activated to detoxify reactive oxygen species. (sb)
