Bread has been a staple food for millennia, which is usually made from ground grain (wheat, rye, spelled, etc.), salt, water and, if necessary, an raising agent. Sourdough or yeast can serve as a leavening agent, however, no such leavening agent is usually contained in traditional flatbread. Germany is known for its distinctive bread culture and the range of bread types available is extremely wide in this country. In addition to white bread (wheat flour), gray bread (rye flour and wheat flour mixture), black bread (mainly rye flour) and whole grain bread (most rye or whole wheat flour), the types of bread available also include many special types of bread that are named after the added ingredients, such as Potato bread, olive bread or onion bread.
