Myth or truth? What is the supposed cause of joint pain?
Millions of Germans suffer from joint pain. Sufferers sometimes claim that the symptoms come from overacidification of the body. Obesity and wet weather are also mentioned as reasons for the pain. But which assumptions are correct and which are just myths? Experts have the answers.
Millions of people suffer from joint pain
Joint pain is common. The hands, knees and hips are usually affected. The reasons for the symptoms include acidity in the body, sensitivity to the weather or being overweight. But are these really causes of joint pain? The Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery (AGA) comments on common assumptions.
Does Acidification Cause Osteoarthritis?
According to experts, osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease. It is often claimed that people affected should not eat meat and cheese, among other things. Because such foods cause acidification of the body and this is said to favor osteoarthritis.
The AGA explains in its message: One speaks of an overacidification of the body when one-sided nutrition with a lot of meat, sausage, cheese, cereal products as well as sweets and little vegetables and fruits increases the acid load in the body.
The reason for this is the different metabolism of the food. Proteins like meat, fish, eggs, but also cereal products like bread, cakes, biscuits as well as alcohol, coffee and sugar are acid-forming, while fruits and vegetables usually have a base-forming effect.
If the body has to permanently excrete a lot of acids, the value of the stress hormone cortisol increases. A permanently increased cortisol level can in turn have a negative effect on the bones and lead to osteoporosis (bone loss) - one of the causes of arthrosis (joint wear).
Even if the connection is complex and there are many other reasons for osteoarthritis in addition to osteoporosis, a balanced diet to prevent bone diseases is definitely recommended, according to the AGA.
Joint wear due to too much movement?
A healthy bone can be permanently burdened into old age. Basically, movement is exactly what the bone needs to stay healthy. If this does not take place sufficiently, the water content in the tissue decreases and the cartilage becomes less elastic.
The result: First there are surface roughening, which increases faster and faster from a certain degree. The dreaded joint arthrosis can then develop from this.
Joint infections, autoimmune diseases or malnutrition can also trigger these pathological processes.
However, caution should be exercised if the bone is damaged. Wrong positions or injuries can cause arthrosis, which is exacerbated by stressful contact sports (e.g. soccer, handball, basketball) or by stop and go sports (e.g. tennis, step aerobics, squash).
Does too little movement promote joint wear?
"In the case of joint problems, the sporting principle applies: move a lot, put less weight on," explained Prof. Dr. Andrea Meurer, Deputy President of the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) in a communication.
"Cyclic movements that move the joint evenly without the use of force are ideal," says the doctor.
Among other things, cycling and swimming are sports that make sense for osteoarthritis.
Movement can also prevent joint wear. It is not for nothing that it says: Whoever snaps will rust ”. From the age of 30, the body begins to lose muscle, writes the AGA.
Exercise and sport are imperative to keep the body fit. Those who let themselves go for years and thus weaken the body do not spare their bones, but put additional strain on them.
What may sound paradoxical is that the muscles support the skeleton and thus protect them from wear and tear. If you want to play sports again after a long break, you have to slowly get used to your muscles.
A permanent overload of the joints due to the lack of supporting muscles can lead to small tears in the cartilage and thus trigger arthrosis.
By the way, caution is advised even with strong diets: the body reacts to the sudden loss of calories with an emergency program and breaks down muscles in order to consume less energy in the future.
So if you want to lose weight, you should pay attention to proteins in the diet and exercise enough.
Weather felt in the bones
Many people are sensitive to the weather and feel the coming rain or a thunderstorm hours before. Common symptoms include headache, fatigue and irritability, but also limb and muscle pain.

Studies have also looked at how bad weather affects pain.
One theory says that pain sensations do not follow rain, wet and cold, but are due to changes in air pressure. Air pressure is the weight of the atmosphere around us.
This pressure compresses the tissue in the body. If the air pressure drops, the tissue can expand more and then press on the joints - which can be felt as pain.
The relationships have not yet been scientifically proven, but there are tips on how people feel about the weather:
Warmth helps, e.g. Prevent heat pads in the gloves, layered clothing, swelling of the limbs, e.g. by moving or wearing compression gloves at night, warming up before going into the cold - and keeping you in a good mood: the brain can bridge many sensations!
Overweight strains the joints
Obesity is one of the main causes of joint wear. Even five kilos overweight double the risk of knee osteoarthritis.
In addition to the knee, the hip is particularly affected. Both joints bear the main weight of the overweight and still have to ensure stability and mobility. If there is a lack of exercise, the supporting muscles are also missing in the long term.
The cartilage loses elasticity and can protect the bone less and less, warn the experts of the AGA - Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery.
